Radon itself does not present too serious a radiological hazard when breathed in and immediately exhaled. The problem lies with decay products which behave more like solids - becoming attached to dust and other atmospheric particals. These can then take up residence in the body and emit alpha particles - which are known to cause cellular damage and have carcinogenic effects.
You can find out whether buildings are in areas that require protective measures by checking the Radon Risk Map (right). Information on local conditions, geology, hydrogeology and related hazards can be obtained from the British Geological Survey.
The BRE (Building Research Establishment) website also provides information on where protective measures may be required in new buildings and extensions, conversions and refurbishments in existing buildings.
